Shelters to Shutters Selected as National Multifamily Housing Council 2018 Beneficiary Charity
NMHC, S2S partnership will also launch new ‘40 for 40’ campaign

VIENNA, Va. – Nov. 08, 2017 – Shelters to Shutters (S2S), a national non-profit that transitions individuals and families from homelessness to economic self-sufficiency by partnering with apartment management companies, today announced it has been selected as the National Multifamily Housing Council’s (NMHC) designated beneficiary charity for 2018. NMHC, which represents the leadership of the $1.3 trillion apartment industry, and its members have raised awareness and more than $1.3 million in financial support for charities since 2012.

This announcement marks S2S’s second consecutive year as NMHC’s designated beneficiary charity.

“Shelters to Shutters is doing vital and inspiring work in the fight to end homelessness. We’re thrilled to be able to support its critical mission for a second straight year,” said Doug Bibby, president of NMHC. “This organization is providing the apartment industry with loyal, hard-working and high-performing employees. We could not be more excited about the work S2S is doing.”

S2S and NMHC are also partnering for a ‘40 for 40’ campaign in celebration of NMHC’s 40th anniversary. The campaign’s goal is to sign up 40 new multifamily partners to assist S2S with its mission. 40 for 40 will launch at the NMHC Annual Meeting, Jan. 16-19, in Orlando, Fla., with a Walk/Run to Benefit the Homeless and will run for 40 consecutive business days following.

Companies that sign up to support S2S with a minimum $5,000 financial contribution will be recognized by both the organization and NMHC as an official 40 for 40 Partner throughout 2018. AvalonBay Communities, Colliers International, Cortland Partners, Entrata, Equity Residential, Middleburg and Waterton are among the companies that have already made a pledge for the campaign.

“We are truly honored to be named by NMHC as its designated charity for 2018,” said Andy Helmer, CEO of S2S. “Their past support of our organization has proven invaluable to us as we expand our reach and change more lives. We anticipate that 2018 will be a time of tremendous growth and accomplishment for S2S, and having NMHC as a partner will help make that happen.”

S2S currently partners with more than 20 apartment management companies – including such major industry players as AvalonBay Communities, Equity Residential and Waterton – to place people experiencing homelessness in onsite, entry-level jobs and provide them with housing at the same communities at which they work. S2S works with a number of homeless-focused non-profits to identify suitable job applicants.

Since its founding in 2014, S2S and its multifamily partners have moved more than 100 people out of homelessness in markets throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Northeast, South and Texas. S2S focuses on the 70 percent of the homeless population who are situationally homeless due to a life-altering event such as job loss, medical or health emergency, divorce, domestic abuse or the loss of a primary income earner. These are people who want to work and return to a life of self-sufficiency but may not receive the governmental support services needed. S2S provides a win-win solution by combating homelessness while providing a pipeline of high-quality, motivated employees for the apartment industry.
